I am thankful for the outspoken women who came before me and demanded to have their voices heard, who fought for the vote, and worked to expand our rights. When I was a young women, I felt like true equality was almost within reach. I believed the generations who would follow would have equal opportunity in our society, better access to reproductive healthcare, and would experience less sexual violence and discrimination.
We have been losing ground.
I refuse to accept that I may have lived at the peak for women’s rights in the United States. I still have a vision for our daughters and our daughters’s daughters.
In the coming weeks, I will share the details of a new project, “You Could Almost Touch It” where we will explore the state of women’s rights in the recent past, how we see some slipping away, and what we are going to do about it.
In the meantime, there’s already a lot of inspirational stories here: short fiction that features complex female protagonists, first person essays about the issues that women face today, and well crafted poetry and prose.
I can’t get enough of these words. I want to hear more stories, unfiltered. I want to read about the things that people used to say were too small for literature. Women’s stories about women’s concerns about women’s lives. You know. Complicated. Tangled.
I am thankful for the writers who chose to share their stories, poetry and essays with our readers. I invite you to read our current and past issues and to submit your own writing for consideration for future issues.
And, if you have the resources to be a supporter, please considering giving to and sharing our kickstarter. We are collecting together the poetry, essays, and short fiction we published in 2023 and are creating a printed anthology. This will allow us to get the words of our writers to more readers and create a lasting legacy.
Let’s keep making noise together and amplifying each other’s voices. Today and everyday.
