The changing landscape of social media has been a big issue for us. Right from the beginning, Twitter’s community was a vital part of our work to engage writers and readers. Then Twitter was bought by Elon Musk and he began transforming it into his version of a social media utopia and my version of a dystopia. For me, his embrace and amplification of bigotry colors every engagement there now. Yet there are thousands of writers and readers that I have no other way to engage with. I’ve talked to writers and publishers. I’ve wrestled with my own conscious.
Something new is on the horizon and it may not look anything like Twitter. I’m fascinated by what will emerge. Reed Berkowitz of Curiouser Institute shared some insights about how it may not be a twitter clone that has us connected and engaged in the future.
But the next thing isn’t here yet. Whatever the next social media platform will be, I know that the world is a better place because of stories. Silencing ourselves makes bigotry stronger. Telling our stories builds empathy and understanding, the only things that really defeat hate. So, here is where we are landing now.
We will remain on X (Twitter) for the time being and use the platform in a very limited way by sharing the work of our writers and announcing calls for submissions. At the same time, we will be part of the growing writing communities on BlueSky and Threads. We will also be looking at other platforms and I will be cross-posting content with my personal social media accounts to further extend our reach.
In fact, we are going to go through all of the work we published in 2023 and repost them on Facebook, BlueSky, Threads, and X.
Please consider following us on as many platforms as possible and don’t forget about signing up to have content delivered via your email.
